:-(

I'm pretty sad today. I've been applying for UK jobs, but I really want to be able to come back here to be with Andy. The US claims to be warm and welcoming, but I've drawn a blank trying to find a way to get a visa... legally, anyway. Apparently I can try inventing my own national security number, or go buy a green card from some guy called Rodriguez if I hang around by the Mexican border, but I don't really want to risk being held for an unspecified length of time under some dark and shady 'anti terror' laws. It's not like I want much, just the opportunity to get a short term, crappily paid job so I have a small amount of available cash and self esteem.

The other option is to get Andy back in the UK.... there are a few lectureships going here and there, but he doesn't seem overly keen...

So I'm back to the fundamental problem... no money, no job etc... What fun!

Hmm... While you're still a Student, companies in the US can get you a J visa which is one hell of a lot easier to get that a full-blown work one (like a H1-B, which are already gone for 2006 I think).
You can work on the J visa for the sponsoring company for a defined period of time (we just had someone on a 10 month placement with us)
So then the only challenge is to find a 'sponsoring' company. You could look for internships in Denver, or the Colorado School of Mines...
Other option is Houston, but that's stilla fair way from Laramie!
Let me know if you want me to pass on any internship offers I get to hear about...

I'm thinking of asking around in Wyo uni if anyone needs a RA for 12 months, since they have a nice, efficient dept that sorts out visa issues.. Andy is on a J visa even though he isn't a student any more. I'll keep looking around.. so yeah pass on any internship news. Better a coupla hours internal flight than a 9 1/2 hour trans atlantic (and a 2 1/2 hour coach journey, and a 3 hour drive- Laramie is a fair way from ANYWHERE!)... oh and thanks for capitalising 'Student'.. mad eme feel important briefly! xxC
